Another view of a Jackson Ferry shot tower in Austinville, Virginia. The tower was built in about 1820 for the manufacture of shots. Shots were created by pouring smelted lead through a sizing sieve, which turned them into small droplets that were then dropped from a 150 ft height. This hardened the lead which was collected in a kettle filled with water at the bottom of the shaft.
